If you’ve just picked up your keys, you’re probably wondering: Where to first?

While Newcastle itself is packed with charm, there is one destination that stands above the rest for a day on the road. Just a 45-to-60 minute drive north of our Raymond Terrace and Birmingham Gardens pick lies Port Stephens—a paradise of 26 golden beaches, massive sand dunes, and crystal-clear waters.

Here is our curated "Local’s Itinerary" for the perfect Port Stephens road trip.

Stop 1: The Tomaree Head Summit Walk

Kick off your morning at Shoal Bay. The hike up Tomaree Head is non-negotiable. It’s a 2.2km return walk that rewards you with the most spectacular panoramic views in New South Wales. From the top, you can see all the way to Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah Islands.

Pro Tip: Pack a bottle of water in the boot of your MG; you’ll need it after the incline!

Stop 2: The Stockton Sand Dunes (Birubi Beach)

Drive your rental over to Anna Bay to witness the Worimi Conservation Lands. These are the largest moving coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Experience: You don't need a 4WD to enjoy it. Park your MG ZS at the Birubi Beach surf club and join a 4WD tour or try your hand at sandboarding. It feels like being on another planet, just 40 minutes from Newcastle.

Stop 3: Lunch with the Dolphins at Nelson Bay

Head into the heart of Nelson Bay for a well-earned lunch. The marina is lined with incredible cafes and seafood spots. Port Stephens is known as the Dolphin Capital of Australia, with over 140 resident bottlenose dolphins.

The Newcastle Car Rentals Advantage: If you’ve rented one of our MG3s, parking in the busy Nelson Bay marina area is a breeze thanks to its compact size and sharp reverse camera.

Stop 4: A Quiet Dip at Zenith Beach

Before heading back, make a quick stop at Zenith Beach. It’s tucked away at the foot of Tomaree Mountain and often feels like a private oasis. It’s the perfect spot for a final ocean dip or a quick photo op with your sleek rental car against the coastal backdrop.
